Huawei G9 Plus makes discreet domestic debut with single 16MP rear cam, SD625

While leaving the dust to settle on the spectacular US launch of the upper mid-range Honor 8, and expecting a number of premium Huawei-branded phones to break cover, Mate 9 and Mate S2 included, our always pampered China-based friends can grab another 9-series Android with a solid quality – pricing ratio.

This one’s called the Huawei G9 Plus, obviously improving on the specifications of the 5.2-inch standard G9, aka P9 Lite, but falling short of the raw processing power, smooth multitasking or photography prowess of the P9 Plus.

Yes, there’s only one camera slapped on the back of the 5.5-inch Huawei G9 Plus, though it’s by no means a featherweight, what with a large 16MP Sony IMX298 lens in tow and several neat tricks up its sleeve.

Under the hood, a respectable octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC takes the place of the 617 inside the G9, as well as the P9 Plus’s homebrewed Kirin 955, doubled by a fitting albeit not exactly stellar 3GB RAM count.

The rest of the features are similarly good, not great, from 1080p screen resolution to 32GB internal storage, EMUI 4.1-skinned Android 6.0 Marshmallow, 3,340 mAh battery juice, and blazing fast fingerprint recognition. Made of premium metal, like all its “cousins”, the G9 Plus is slightly curvier and skinnier, setting you back the equivalent of $360 (CNY 2,400). No words on an eventual Western expansion.
