Qualcomm files complaint against Meizu on patent infringement allegations

After many years of drawn-out, highly publicized legal battles between tech companies as diverse and influential as Apple, Samsung, Google, Oracle, Microsoft, Huawei and HTC, the patent wars seemed to slowly blow over lately.

But that’s not stopping semiconductor giant Qualcomm from filing a complaint against a smaller, on-the-rise smartphone manufacturer in the Beijing Intellectual Property Court. China-based Meizu, which is on the verge of a long overdue US expansion, will have to fend off accusations of “unlawfully” using QCM technologies without a proper license.

Sounds serious, and potentially money-wasting for the Pro 6 makers currently focused on not only spreading their wings to Western shores with affordable handhelds, but taking a stab at high-end VR headsets as well.

Of course, Meizu can rely on a very important home court advantage in this patent duel with the “world leader in 3G, 4G and next-generation wireless technologies”, though if Qualcomm indeed got “more than 100 other companies, including the largest Chinese mobile device suppliers” to accept its “rectification plan terms” and pay the demanded royalties, it’ll be mighty hard to justify this single outfit not cough up the cash.
