You can bet the farm now on the Nexus Marlin featuring SD820, 4GB RAM, 13/8MP cams

Mobile industry insiders have been known to make mistakes regarding high-profile unreleased devices, especially those manufactured by companies like LG, Huawei, Motorola or Asus with Google’s supervision and Nexus seal of approval. And pre-launch benchmarks can also occasionally be misleading.

But it’s hard to imagine an assortment of the two different classes of reliable sources could so perfectly sync up to misrepresent the oft-leaked HTC-produced Nexus Marlin. This time, it’s AnTuTu that reveals the innards of the 5.5-inch N6P sequel, and they’re the exact same specifications previously divulged by Android Police and Geekbench.

Sorry, power users, it doesn’t look like you’ll be getting Qualcomm’s spanking new, marginally improved Snapdragon 821 processor, a record-matching 6GB RAM count, or anything over humdrum-sounding (by ultra-high-end standards) 13 and 8MP camera lenses.

Just a Snapdragon 820 SoC, with a matching Adreno 530 GPU, 4 gigs of memory, 32GB internal storage space (to start with, presumably), Quad HD screen resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), as well as Android 7.0 Nougat out the box, obviously.

How is this any better than Huawei’s Nexus 6P, then? We’ll have to wait, possibly until October, and see if there’s more than meets the eye about the 13/8-megapixel shooters, or perhaps something new and exciting in areas not covered by synthetic benchmarks. Connectivity, sensors, VR capabilities, build quality, the Nexus Marlin might still stand out from the pack and its predecessor… one way or another.
