Apple quickly releases iOS 8.0.2 to fix iPhone issues caused by the prior update
It took just over a day for Apple to fix the iOS software update that disabled both cellular service and the Touch ID on iPhones. The software works as advertised but Apple will have to battle the fact that it let users down.
Apple released iOS 8.0.2 for mobile devices on Thursday afternoon, following an update pushed the prior day that caused major issues. After Version 8.0.1 caused iPhone 6 and 6 Plus phones to lose cellular service and also disabled the device’s Touch ID, Apple pulled the update within hours of its release and posted instructions for impacted iPhone owners to revert back to iOS 8.0.
The new software update fixes those two problems caused by the prior version; I installed it on an iPhone 6 and verified that both my cellular service and Touch ID are working. The update also includes the fixes were originally in iOS 8.0.1, the main one being a bug fix to support Apple HealthKit apps. The Reachability feature in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus also gain reliability according to the official release notes:
While the fix for yesterday’s software snafu arrived relatively quick, chatter around the web indicates Apple’s reliability when it comes to software updates is in question. MacRumors reports Apple officially says 40,000 handsets were impacted by iOS 8.0.1. That’s a small percentage of the more than 10 million new iPhones sold last weekend, but the company will still have to battle the perception that it didn’t properly test the iOS 8.0.1 software update.
