I have nothing against store-bought ice cream cones, but I don’t keep them stocked at all times. This has prevented me from enjoying a cone on a whim, but no longer, as ChefSteps has shown me how to make them using plain ol’ sandwich bread.

To make these, you will need: bread, two baking sheets, parchment paper, and a cone roller (which you can either make out of a piece of still plastic orpurchase for less than six bucks). First, trim the crusts off the bread and feed them to some ducks or something. Roll the trimmed bread slices out super thin, cut them into discs, and brush them with melted butter. Sprinkle them with a little sugar, maybe some cinnamon, or anything else that sound like it would compliment your cone. (Make sure you get both sides.) Next, grab two baking pans, and flip one over so it’s facing down. Place a sheet of parchment paper on top, lay your buttery bread disks on top of that, place another piece or parchment on top of those, top the whole thing with another baking sheet, and bake them for six minutes at 325 °F. Remove from the oven and—using the parchment so you don’t burn your fingers—wrap the bread disks around a cone roller and let them harden for about half a minute.
